Me, Myself and I

Would you go to an event alone? Do you always need someone to accompany you when you go out?

Chances are, there are a thousand other people thinking the exact same thing.

Recently, I decided to attend Keretapi Sarong 2026 on my own. And to my surprise, they even had a special group for people like me: Geng Single, or the Single Gang.

When I arrived at the station, I was welcomed by a group of girls with big, warm smiles. It was as though they were saying, “It’s okay, we’re all here together!”

There were no awkward conversations, just a group of strangers enjoying each other’s company while singing along to Kami Anak Malaysia. We walked together all the way to TRX, getting to know one another along the way. I found myself genuinely enjoying the company of people I had only just met.

And then a thought struck me.

Being single in KL can feel lonely sometimes, but I think society is beginning to understand the assignment.

It’s 2026, and there are plenty of events and communities that celebrate people from all walks of life. Whether you’re a bookworm, a music enthusiast, an art lover, a Harry Potter fan, someone searching for a soulmate, or simply someone who needs a friend to talk to, there’s probably something out there for you.

Sometimes, you just have to go.

Go alone.

Sit alone.

Walk into a room where you know absolutely no one.

And maybe, just maybe, you’ll walk out knowing someone new.

That’s what stepping out of your comfort zone really looks like. It doesn’t always have to be something big or dramatic. Sometimes, it’s simply putting on your shoes and telling yourself:

“I’m going anyway.”

That’s how you discover new places, new experiences, and new people.

Think about what happens when you find yourself lost somewhere unfamiliar. You become more alert. You start paying attention to your surroundings, figuring out where to go, and eventually, asking strangers for directions.

It may seem like a small thing, but these are the little survival skills you discover when you have no one else to rely on. The sudden decisions you have to make, the plans you need to change, and even the difficult people you encounter along the way can all shape how you respond to life’s challenges.

Spending time alone also gives you the opportunity to discover your own potential and realise what you’re capable of doing independently. You begin to recognise not only your strengths but also your weaknesses.

You learn what you enjoy, what makes you uncomfortable, what you’re capable of, and sometimes, what you’ve been avoiding.

Most importantly, you learn to appreciate and love yourself a little more.

So, the next time you come across an event that interests you but have no one to go with, don’t let that stop you.

Just go. You might surprise yourself.
